The White House,  The Vice President Speaks at the White House Foster Youth Event. Online video clip. YouTube. YouTube, 8 Dec. 2014.  Web. 14 Feb. 2014

The video clip is from a speech the Vice President, Joe Biden, gave at a White House foster youth event. I believe the source to be credible since it’s content comes from the federal government. The genre is a persuasive speech. Biden talks about the tens of thousands of foster children in The United States who are stuck or left behind in the system. His audience is specifically the young adults who have made it out of the foster system to be voices for these forgotten children.  He calls them experts in foster care because they have lived it and seen the good and bad care that is currently available.  He desires to see these young adults partner with non-profits and government youth advisory boards to make the foster care system in America better overall. Many children are hurt by the system, scared and left behind in the system. By combining government and private efforts, he believes, “we can open the door of opportunity” for these children. That it is “within all our power to make it possible for children that are in or going to in the system to have a better life”.  Biden suggests that those who are doing their part to help these youths are, “doing God’s work”.

"Childhood taught foster parent importance of family." Sedalia Democrat [Sedalia, MO] 6 Sept. 2010. General OneFile. Web. 15 Feb. 2015.

This source is a newspaper article. It seems credible because the author is telling the story of someone’s firsthand experience as a foster child. This article is organized in a way that gives a history first and then an outcome. The author tells the story of a troubled young child who lived in many foster homes and finally successfully in a group foster home. He later returns as an adult to become a foster parent in the same group home. The author’s audience is those who could help foster children either by becoming a foster parent or donating money to help this particular group home continue to operate.  The author wants to convey the importance of this particular group home that takes in children who have been neglected, abused, homeless or whose families cannot support them.  This article shows the importance of stability and family, especially in the lives of children who come from a troubled background.

“Foster and Adoptive Family Parenting” Oregon.gov n.p. Web. n.d

This is a page on the Oregon government website which gives all the information needed to become a foster parent. It is credible because it is a government website. The page genre is purely informational both asking questions of potential foster parents and giving the steps that need to take place before fostering. The information is organized in a step-by-step manner. The first suggestion is to contact your local DHS office where you can talk with staff and see if there are any upcoming informational meetings. You then need to consider, with all members of your family, if becoming a foster home will work for all of you. After the decision is made you will need to apply and have the proper background/ criminal checks completed. Once you are accepted you will attend training to prepare you for a child that may have been neglected or abused.  A home study will then be completed to meet all members of your family and to check safety of your home. You will then work with DHS to have a child placed into your home.
